Multi-use lasers cast doctors in new light

And that's just the beginning.

Lasers can vaporize varicose veins, zap stubborn acne and get rid of unwanted hair. In the past decade, lasers also have been approved to unclog arteries, crush gallstones and repair damaged retinas.

Lasers are playing a growing role in medical care as technology has improved and doctors are finding new uses for the devices. "The industry is growing at record paces," says A. Jay Burns, a plastic surgeon in Dallas and former president of the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery....

Dr. Burns was listed in the "Super Doctors" article in Texas Monthly in 2008, 2007, 2006,  2005 and 2004.

Dr Burns acts as a regular guest plastic surgeon on Good Morning Texas [seen weekdays from 9-10 am on WFAA-TV/Channel 8 in Dallas] and has been featured on the Oprah Winfrey "Medical Miracles" show on November 15, 1999.  He has also contributed as the consumer expert for the Debra Duncan Show on KTRK/Channel 13 in Houston, as well as a talk show host for talk powerhouse KFI-AM/640 in Los Angeles.


Dr. Burns, who was born in Garland, Texas in 1955 studied for his Baccalaureate at Baylor University in Waco, TX. and graduated Magna Cum Laude, in 1977. He was voted "Outstanding Senior Man" in 1977 and "Outstanding Young Alumnus" in 1994. He received his Doctor of Medicine Degree at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas TX, and served his Internship for General Surgery at the University of Utah School of Medicine in Salt Lake City, Utah, from 1981 - 1982 under Frank Moody, M.D.

He served his residency in General Surgery at the University of Utah School of Medicine in Salt Lake City, Utah, from 1982 - 1986 under William Gay, Jr., M.D. and his residency in Plastic Surgery from 1986 - 1988 at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, TX under Fritz Barton, Jr., M.D.

Dr. Burns is Board Certified by the American Board of Surgery (expired) and the American Board of Plastic Surgeons, Inc. and has a teaching appointment at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center of Dallas where he has served as an assistant professor since July of 1988.  He also received a Fellowship (Vascular Anomalies) from July 1988 - October 1988 at Boston Children's Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts under John B. Mulliken, M.D.

He served as president of the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery April 2006-2007.  The Society has over 3,000 members representing more than 45 specialties and is a valuable resource for laser research, safety, education, and clinical knowledge.
